On September 10-12 WWF participated to the 1st International Conference on Maritime Transport which took place in Rome, Italy.
The Conference was organised by the Wessex Institute, and the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’ (Italy) and attracted a wide international spread of delegates, including government representatives, private sector and research institutions. The main objective of the conference was the dissemination of knowledge on maritime transport. Topics discussed covered different aspects of the sector, including sustainability and environmental impacts.
WWF had the opportunity to present the paper “Safeguarding Marine Protected Areas In The Growing Mediterranean Blue Economy Recommendations For The Maritime Transport Sector” which summarizes the main outcomes of PHAROS4MPAs, providing recommendations aiming to avoid maritime transport impacts on marine protected areas.
The feedback received was very positive from both the participating government and institutional representatives, which included the Port of Valencia, among others. The paper will be published in the Journal of Design & Nature and Ecodynamics, ensuring an even wider outreach.
